Johannesburg – Off-beat lower division Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila’s claim this weekend that they have purchased the Absa Premiership franchise of local soccer’s oldest club, Bidvest Wits – something that has still to be reviewed, authenticated and recognised by the PSL- has been described variously as a “tragedy”, “a disservice to South African soccer” and “very, very sad”.
The most devastating part regarding Wits’ fate is that they have taken a complete change and made a mockery of the commitments and principles espoused when the effective new owners took control 15 years ago.
The social policy that Bidvest made under the heading “Corporate Social Responsibility” at their proclaimed takeover and which are still imprinted on the internet, but have now been transformed into something of a mockery.
The pious words might now be looked at as something of a bitter irony by the thousands of students the club has represented over the year, including the 50 Wits University bursaries installed by Bidvest during their tenure at the club.
Meanwhile, Bidvest chairperson, Alan Fainman, has reputed to be over the rising financial situation, but not all that critical in view of the Group’s wealth.
With regard to the PSL, the League claims their only flow of information regarding a Bidvest sale is what they hear from the media – and officially they have heard nothing.
